Senior Rotation Catalog
2007-2008

GENERAL INFORMATION

The Senior Rotation Catalog contains descriptions of all senior elective rotations offered at the University of Missouri - Columbia School of Medicine, as well as information concerning enrollment for rotations. Please read these introductory pages carefully so that you will know the procedures for proper senior rotation enrollment. We encourage you to bookmark this website for reference throughout the academic year.

Visiting students from other institutions see "Visiting Students" located to the left of the screen.

Third and Fourth Year Requirements

The third year consists of seven core clerkships. Five clerkships are eight weeks in duration. Psychiatry six weeks, and Neurology is 2 weeks, for a total of 48 weeks. The seven core clerkships are: Internal Medicine, Surgery, Child Health, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Family and Community Medicine, Psychiatry, and Neurology. The clerkships are open to University of Missouri students only.

The fourth year consists of 32 weeks of required selectives and electives:

  1. 12 weeks of advanced selectives in four week blocks (1 surgical, 1 medical, and the 3rd from any of the seven core clerkships). Selectives (sub-internships) are four weeks experiences in which the student has a higher level of responsibility and shared decision-making with the preceptor. The selective is identified by the department as meeting this requirement. See Selectives for a complete listing. There are limits on the number of enrollees. Students must meet the pre-requisites for the selective including completion of the core clerkships and other department specific pre-requisites.

  2. Four weeks of Advanced Biomedical Sciences (ABS). See ABS listing for courses or Research options.

  3. 16 weeks of general electives; these satisfy categorical requirements. An elective is an optional experience offered by a department, with or without pre-requisites. See listing. Some electives require completion of the third year clerkships and others do not.

Tracks

Two alternative tracks are available to students:

1. Rural Track

Students in this track can take up to 24 weeks (3 blocks) of the required clerkships in a community setting. Contact Kevin Kane, M.D., Department of Family Medicine. List of rural track electives.

2. Clinician / Scientist Track

This track is for students wishing to pursue research/academic medicine but who are not in the M.D./Ph.D. program. Students may use research to meet the Advanced Biomedical Sciences requirement and 12 weeks of general electives. The student's proposal for satisfaction of course requirements will be approved by the faculty on an individual basis. Contact Michael Misfeldt, Ph.D., Department of Microbiology.

Fourth year rotation enrollment

All electives, whether taken for credit or not must be officially enrolled through the department student coordinator and the Office of Medical Education (MA215) two weeks prior to the first day of the block. Add/Drop forms are available from the student coordinators or in the Office of Medical Education and must be approved by your advisor, the student coordinator, and the Office of Medical Education before enrollment is accepted.

Cancellation of Rotations

Each elective rotation has a very limited number of positions available each block. In order to allow other students to sign up for rotations, it is essential that you immediately contact the department student coordinator if you need to drop a registered rotation (either for credit or a free block). Failure to do so will deny your classmates the opportunity to register for that rotation. Rotation add/drop forms are available in student coordinator offices and the Office of Medical Education.

Except under unusual circumstances, a student may not drop any required or elective rotation within a two-week period prior to the first day of the block.

Throughout the academic year, most students will make many schedule changes. Therefore, if you initially cannot schedule an elective you wish to take, you should periodically check with departmental student coordinators for available positions in that elective.

Block Changes

If you wish to switch a fourth-year rotation from one block to another, you must check with the departmental student coordinator to determine availability of space in the desired block. The change will not be official until the completed Add/Drop Form is received in MA215; your advisor's signature is not required for a rotation change.

Retroactive Credit

All paperwork should be signed and received in the Office of Medical Education (MA215) two weeks before the first day of the rotation. Once a rotation has begun, changes in credit are not permitted.

Dropping Credit

All schedule changes must be made at least two weeks before the start of the rotation. Except under extraordinary circumstances, once a rotation has been started it may not be dropped.

Research Rotations

Most basic science and clinical departments offer a number of research rotations. Many of these opportunities are described in this publication. You may also contact individual departments to learn of other research projects that might be of interest to you.

As you plan your fourth year rotation schedule, please be advised that some states require a certain number of weeks in clinical training. Please see the Office of Medical Education in MA215 for a catalog of licensing requirements for each state.

Off-Campus Fourth-Year Rotations

A student may request permission to receive credit for an off-site fourth-year clinical rotation by submitting a written request (forms are available in the Office of Medical Education) to the appropriate department. No off-site fourth-year rotation for credit will be allowed without prior approval from:

  1. The student's advisor, who attests that the program offers a distinctly valuable experience to the student;
  2. The appropriate UMC course director (through the student coordinator), who must attest to the quality of the program and its advantages to the student; and
  3. The Associate Dean for Curriculum, who assures that the student is in good academic standing.

Only fourth-year rotations taken at UMC will be used in computation for graduation with honors.

NOTE: The UMC Off-Site Agreement form must be completed two weeks before the start of the rotation. Completion of the off-site school forms does not register you for credit at UMC.

Remuneration

Students may not receive both remuneration and credit for the same clinical rotation, except under the following circumstances:

  1. A research rotation, either at UMC or elsewhere;
  2. A clinical rotation elsewhere for which a stipend is given that covers only living and travel expenses; or
  3. Rotations in the Armed Services.

Application forms should be returned to:
