Module 13: Giving Feedback

Types of Receivers of Feedback

When planning on giving feedback to a learner, keep in mind the following types of receivers of feedback:

Closed Style (Negative Receiver)

  • Closed — Learner basically ignores the feedback, may or may not pretend to listen but has no real interest in the message

  • Rationalizing — Learner finds justifications for the feedback that release the learner of any personal responsibility

  • Disrespectful — Learner does not value the person giving feedback, his/her right to give feedback, or the feedback message that is being given

  • Defensive/Attacking — Learner defends personal actions and verbally attacks the feedback giver

  • Superficial/Patronizing — Learner listens and possibly indicates agreement, but really believes that feedback will have little effect

Open Style (Positive Receiver)

  • Open — Learner truly listens without interruptions or objections and accepts the feedback without denial

  • Interested / Sincere — Learner genuinely wants feedback and wants to make appropriate changes

  • Respectful — Learner values the person giving feedback and recognizes the value of feedback being given

  • Engaged — Learner listens carefully, interacting appropriately and asking questions for clarification when needed

  • Responsive / Thoughtful — Learner is willing to hear what is being said and tries to understand what led to the feedback

Catalyst
When you have been on the receiving end of feedback, what type of receiver were you — Open or Closed??? Defensive or Responsive??? Did the person giving feedback make it easy or difficult for you to receive the message?
