Module 8: The Art and Science of Effective Lecturing

Give Lectures That Are Easy to Outline

  • Let students know what you are going to discuss and why—a roadmap
  • Provide an outline as a handout with space to write
  • Give the audience a list of questions to stimulate thinking in advance
  • Follow the outline so the audience knows where you are and what comes next
  • Use lists whenever possible to emphasize specific parts of your lecture
  • Organize the lecture into 10-15 minute segments
  • Schedule a break if the presentation is more than one hour
